The Goodness Of God

Matt Brown Week 4

This week, Pastor Matthew Stephen Brown finishes our series in Jonah and has us reflect on the goodness of God.

WHAT YOU CAN DO THIS WEEK

Think about the goodness of God. Ask Him to help you recall big moments and recent situations in which you have experienced His goodness. Thank Him for each of these instances. Talk with God about these experiences, asking Him some questions like: What is happening in your life when you are questioning God’s goodness? What is it about these situations that challenges your confidence that God is good? Do your thoughts and feelings accurately reflect who God is as revealed in Scripture? What bigger picture might God want to reveal to you that would change your perspective and feelings towards God’s goodness? If you are in a difficult season or situation, ask God to show you His goodness for hope and strength.

Despite Jonah’s obedience, he was unhappy when the Ninevites repented and God showed them mercy. He knew YHWH to be a God who shows mercy and compassion to sinners. It was the very reason why Jonah was so reluctant to prophetically speak to the nation. Sadly, many Christians have a heart like Jonah's. Loving our enemies is hard, but that is what makes us different! We have to learn to genuinely love them and rejoice when they repent. We have to die to ourselves to be made alive in God. A real movement of God reveals the hatred in our hearts. The challenge and goal of this series is for us to confront this hatred, moving from hate to hope in a season of political tension. We are called to hold to our spiritual mission during political or national conflict.
