Luke 22: Have You Been Rescued?

252 – Luke 22: Have You Been Rescued?

For the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are
lost. Luke 19:10 NLT

Everyone is broken

The
Festival of Unleavened Bread, which is also called Passover, was approaching. The leading priests and teachers of
religious law were plotting how to kill Jesus, but they were afraid of the
people’s reaction. Then Satan
entered into Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve disciples, and he went to the leading priests
and captains of the Temple guard to discuss the best way to betray Jesus to
them. They were delighted, and
they promised to give him money. So
he agreed and began looking for an opportunity to betray Jesus so they could
arrest him when the crowds weren’t around. Luke 22:1-6 NLT

Peter
said, “Lord, I am ready to go to prison with you, and even to die with you.” But Jesus said, “Peter, let me tell
you something. Before the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will deny three
times that you even know me.” Luke 22:33-34 NLT

Then they began to argue among
themselves about who would be the greatest among them. Luke 22:24 NLT

Jesus came for broken people

When the time came, Jesus and the
apostles sat down together at the table. Jesus said, “I have been very eager to eat this Passover meal with you
before my suffering begins. He
took some bread and gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and
gave it to the disciples, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do
this in remembrance of me.” After
supper he took another cup of wine and said, “This cup is the new covenant
between God and his people – an agreement confirmed with my blood, which is
poured out as a sacrifice for you. Luke 22:14; 19-20 NLT

“Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to
sift each of you like wheat. But
I have pleaded in prayer for you, Simon, that your faith should not fail. So
when you have repented and turned to me again, strengthen your brothers.” Luke
22:31-32 NLT

“Lord,
should we fight? We brought the swords!” And one of them struck at the high
priest’s slave, slashing off his right ear.
But Jesus said, “No more of this.” And he touched the man’s ear and healed
him. Luke 22:49b-51 NLT

Broken people are rescued by believing in
Jesus

“For this is how God loved the
world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will
not perish but have eternal life. God
sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world
through him. John 3:16-17 NLT

Believers in Jesus…

Show godly sorrow

For the kind of sorrow God wants
us to experience leads us away from sin and results in salvation. There’s no
regret for that kind of sorrow. But worldly sorrow, which lacks repentance,
results in spiritual death. 2 Cor 7:10 NLT

Move beyond failure

But I have pleaded in prayer for
you, Simon, that your faith should not fail. So when you have repented and
turned to me again, strengthen your brothers.” Luke 22:32 NLT

So
when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me more than
these?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him,
“Feed My lambs.” He said to him
again a second time, “Simon, son of
Jonah, do you love Me?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.”
He said to him, “Tend My sheep.” He
said to him the third time, “Simon, son
of Jonah, do you love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third
time, “Do you love Me?”And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things; You know
that I love You.” Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep. John 21:15-17 NLT
