Using the Enneagram to Change the Way I Relate

Christianity is a spiritual movement toward right relationships with God, others and myself

“Teacher, which is the most important commandment in the law of Moses?” Jesus replied, “‘You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” *MATTHEW 22:36-39 NLT *

The Bible is the ultimate source of truth for understanding God and his commands for my life

All scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work. 2 TIMOTHY 3:16-17 NLT

The Bible reveals how God can use non‑Christians and their wisdom to help us become real with ourselves

Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, “Where is he who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw his star in the east, and have come to worship him.” MATTHEW 2:1-2 NASB *
One of themselves, a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.” *TITUS 1:12 NASB *
The enneagram is a *tool
Sandals Church is going to use to help you dig in to the real you. The goal of this series is not to become an expert on the enneagram, but to become an expert on yourself and improve how you relate to others and God.

The enneagram sees people in three major categories called the triads

The Gut: 8, 9, 1 – Where people see the world through their instincts
The Heart: 2, 3, 4 – Where people see the world through their feelings
The Head: 5, 6, 7 – Where people see the world through their thoughts

God wants to…

Challenge my instincts

But these people scoff at things they do not understand. Like unthinking animals, they do whatever their instincts tell them, and so they bring about their own destruction. JUDE 10
So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves. GALATIANS 5:16 NLT

Cleanse my feelings

The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is? JEREMIAH 17:9 NLT
Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me. PSALM 51:10 NLT

Change my thoughts

The LORD observed the extent of human wickedness on the earth, and he saw that everything they thought or imagined was consistently and totally evil. GENESIS 6:5 NLT
Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. ROMANS 12:2 NLT
