Unwrapping My Spiritual Gift

I HAVE TO TRUST THAT GOD HAS A GIFT FOR ME

In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as God has given you. 7 If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach well. 8 If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly. ROMANS 12:6-8 NLT

Gifts are given, not earned.

TO UNWRAP MY SPIRITUAL GIFT, I MUST:

IDENTIFY THE GIFT THE HOLY SPIRIT GAVE ME

Categories of gifts:

God does not call the qualified, but qualifies the called.

For God’s gifts and his call can never be withdrawn. ROMANS 11:29 NLT

ASK THE HOLY SPIRIT TO GUIDE ME TO MY GIFT

It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have. 1 CORINTHIANS 12:11 NLT

ASK FOR INPUT AND PRAYER FROM TRUSTED LEADERS

Do not neglect the spiritual gift you received through the prophecy spoken over you when the elders of the church laid their hands on you. 1 TIMOTHY 4:14 NLT

STUDY GOD’S WORD AND OPEN MY HEART

USE MY SPIRITUAL GIFT TO SERVE THE CHURCH

God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another. 1 PETER 4:10 NLT

UNDERSTAND THAT EVERY SPIRITUAL GIFT MATTERS AND IS ESSENTIAL

All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it. 1 CORINTHIANS 12:27 NLT

Yes, there are many parts, but only one body. 21 The eye can never say to the hand, “I don’t need you.” The head can’t say to the feet, “I don’t need you.” 1 CORINTHIANS 12:20-21 NLT

SURROUND MYSELF WITH PEOPLE WHO ENCOURAGE ME TO USE MY GIFTS

This is why I remind you to fan into flames the spiritual gift God gave you when I laid my hands on you. 2 TIMOTHY 1:6 NLT

REMIND MYSELF DAILY THAT I AM A GIFT TO MY LOCAL CHURCH

Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. EPHESIANS 4:11 NLT

My Notes

Discussion Questions

Choose a couple questions from each section to discuss and reflect on the sermon as a group:

  1. START HERE: What have you discovered you’re naturally good at – that thing people often come to you for? What about that is enjoyable or life-giving?
  2. KEEP GOING: According to Romans 12:6-8 NLT, where do spiritual gifts come from and what does God want us to do with our gifts? What stands out about the variety of gifts?
  3. KEEP GOING: Read Romans 12:3-5 NLT. Gifts are given, not earned. How does that change what you believe about your gifts or how you view/value the gifts of others?
  4. KEEP GOING: What’s one spiritual gift you believe God has (or may have) given you? Describe the experiences, feedback, or opportunities that helped you recognize that. What would you need to trust about yourself, God or others to fully unwrap that gift?
  5. KEEP GOING: Read 1 Corinthians 12:20-21 NLT. Have you struggled with comparing your gift with others or believing your contribution matters? What would help you grow more confident in your gifting or in how God is calling you to use it?
  6. KEEP GOING: Read 1 Peter 4:10 NLT. You are a gift to the Church and your gift can benefit others. How do you see yourself using your gift to bless and serve others? What is standing between you and using your gift?
  7. LIVE IT OUT: Read 2 Timothy 1:6 NLT. What gift do you want to explore, develop, or use more intentionally? What is one step you’ll take this week to “fan into flames” what God has given you? Who can you invite to encourage you along the way?
