Trusting Jesus With My Deepest Needs

29 As Jesus and the disciples left the town of Jericho, a large crowd followed behind. 30 Two blind men were sitting beside the road. When they heard that Jesus was coming that way, they began shouting, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!” 31 “Be quiet!” the crowd yelled at them. But they only shouted louder, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!” 32 When Jesus heard them, he stopped and called, “What do you want me to do for you?” 33 “Lord,” they said, “we want to see!” 34 Jesus felt sorry for them and touched their eyes. Instantly they could see! Then they followed him. MATTHEW 20:29-34 NLT

I MUST TRUST THAT:

JESUS CAN SEE ME IN THE MIDST OF THE MASSIVE CROWDS

29 As Jesus and the disciples left the town of Jericho, a large crowd followed behind. MATTHEW 20:29 NLT

You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. PSALM 139:15 NLT

Thereafter, Hagar used another name to refer to the LORD, who had spoken to her. She said, “You are the God who sees me.” GENESIS 16:13 NLT

JESUS WILL LISTEN TO MY CRIES WHEN NO ONE ELSE DOES

30 Two blind men were sitting beside the road. When they heard that Jesus was coming that way, they began shouting, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!” 31 “Be quiet!” the crowd yelled at them. But they only shouted louder, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!” 32 When Jesus heard them, he stopped and called, “What do you want me to do for you?” MATTHEW 20:30-32 NLT

For he has not ignored or belittled the suffering of the needy. He has not turned his back on them, but has listened to their cries for help. PSALM 22:24 NLT

The LORD is close to all who call on him, yes, to all who call on him in truth. 19 He grants the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cries for help and rescues them. PSALM 145:18-19 NLT

JESUS IS THE ONLY ONE WITH REAL HEALING POWER

People believe in:

People will believe in almost anything, except in Jesus.

(Jesus said) The world’s sin is that it refuses to believe in me. JOHN 16:9 NLT

33  “Lord,” they said, “we want to see!” 34 Jesus felt sorry for them and touched their eyes. Instantly they could see! Then they followed him. MATTHEW 20:33-34 NLT

JESUS IS SO POWERFUL HE CAN USE BROKEN PEOPLE TO HELP ME HEAL

Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results

JAMES 5:16 NLT

If I really want to heal, I have to be willing to get real.

Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. HEBREWS 4:16 ESV

My Notes

Discussion Questions

Use the following questions to reflect on the sermon and choose a couple from each section to discuss as a group:

  1. START HERE: When was the last time you felt unseen, overlooked, or drowned out by a crowd? What did that feel like?
  2. START HERE: Where are we tempted to look for healing, comfort, or answers apart from Jesus? Why can that be an appealing alternative?
  3. START HERE: Describe what mercy looks like in real life. Share an example you’ve seen or experienced.
  4. KEEP GOING: Read Matthew 20:29-34 (NLT). Jesus stops when He hears the two blind men. What does that reveal about what gets Jesus’ attention?
  5. KEEP GOING: Is there anything that keeps you from being honest with Jesus about what you really need?
  6. KEEP GOING: How does it feel to know that God sees and listens to you in the midst of everyone else, especially if you’ve ever felt overlooked?
  7. KEEP GOING: Imagine Jesus stops to talk with you and asks, “What do you want me to do for you?” How would you honestly respond?
  8. KEEP GOING: Is there a prayer request you’ve avoided sharing because it feels too vulnerable? How could your group help you feel safe enough to share it?
  9. LIVE IT OUT: After the blind men were healed, they followed Jesus. Where in your life do you need to take a step toward following Jesus out of obedience?
  10. LIVE IT OUT: What might change in your life if you began to see interruptions as opportunities to show God’s love and mercy?
