Relationship Priorities

Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. PSALM 90:12 NIV

PRIORITY 1: My Relationship with GOD

One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple. PSALM 27:4 NIV

PRIORITY 2: My Relationship with ME

May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 THESSALONIANS 5:23 NIV

PRIORITY 3: My Relationship with MY SPOUSE

“For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. EPHESIANS 5:31-32 NIV

PRIORITY 4: My Relationship with MY KIDS

Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. 1 TIMOTHY 5:8 NIV

PRIORITY 5: My Relationship with MY WORLD

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. JOHN 3:16 NIV

Community Group Discussion Guide

  1. What are some of the criteria you use to prioritize who you spend time with and who you don’t?
  2. Read Matthew 6:33. Why do you think it is important on a practical level that our relationship with God is our first relational priority?
  3. If you made an ordered list of your relational priorities, would God take the top spot? If so, are there some helpful tips that you can share with the group? If not, what can you do to rearrange your priorities to put God first?
  4. Read John 17:20-21. What words, phrases, or illustrations would you use to describe the relationship between Jesus and Father God?
  5. In what specific ways do those words, phrases, or illustrations match your relationships with the people in your life? If they don’t, what gaps are evident? What steps can you personally take to be described in that manner?
  6. As you look at your life and relationships, what is holding you back from this oneness with others that God is calling us to and what can we do to help you?

Personal Reflection Guide

Find a place to sit quietly with God, taking inventory with yourself, asking the following questions: Are you feeling challenged in any way by the topics of this week’s message? As you study your relationships, can you see any areas of improvement that you might be able to act upon? Is God putting his finger on any specific things that you believe he is asking you to adjust? Are there any toxic relationships that you may need to keep your distance from? In our busy day-to-day, to what degree is God the top priority in your life? Do you consult him, thank him, go to him with your heart on matters big and small? If how we are doing with God often determines how we are doing with others, can you look at your relationships and see the proof that making God the priority has benefitted your relationships with family, friends, and co-workers? Spend some time in prayer, talk to God about what you are seeing, the good and bad, asking him to heal any brokenness that exists in your relationships. Ask him to help you put him in his rightful place in your heart and daily life. Thank him for being a God who hears you, transforms you, and brings restoration to the most broken places in our lives.
