Real Rest

Sacred Space: Real Rest

Remember
what it says: “Today when you hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts as Israel
did when they rebelled.” And who was it who rebelled against God, even though
they heard his voice? Wasn’t it the people Moses led out of Egypt? So we see
that because of their unbelief they were not able to enter his rest.  HEBREWS
3:15, 16, 19 NLT

God’s
promise of entering his rest still stands, so we ought to tremble with fear
that some of you might fail to experience it. For this good news—that God has
prepared this rest—has been announced to us just as it was to them. But it did
them no good because they didn’t share the faith of those who listened to God.
For only we who believe can enter his rest.
So God’s rest is there for people to enter, but those who first heard
this good news failed to enter because they disobeyed God. HEBREWS 4:1-3 NLT

So God
set another time for entering his rest, and that time is today… Now if Joshua
had succeeded in giving them this rest, God would not have spoken about another
day of rest still to come.  So there is a
special rest still waiting for the people of God.  For all who have entered into God’s rest have
rested from their labors, just as God did after creating the world.  So let us do our best to enter that rest. But
if we disobey God, as the people of Israel did, we will fall.”  HEBREWS 6-11 NLT

Sacred places are marked by rest

THE BAD
REPORT

So they
brought to the people of Israel a bad report of the land that they had spied
out, saying, “The land, through which we
have gone to spy it out, is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the
people that we saw in it are of great height. And there we saw the Nephilim, we
seemed to ourselves like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.” NUMBERS 13:32-33 ESV

To enter rest I must silence lies

Rest takes more faith than
work

DAVID

“The Lord
is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures.” PSALM
23:1-2 ESV

JESUS

“Come to
me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke
upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will
find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” MATTHEW 11:28-29 ESV

The miracle that got us here
reminds us God can get us there

Stop asking God to change my fear
and ask him to change my faith

“Since
then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the
Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.”  HEBREWS 4:14 ESV
