Fear and anxiety:
- Rob me of the ability to be present
- Keep me from experiences
- Cause me to miss opportunities
- Never allow me to have real rest
For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline. 2 TIMOTHY 1:7 NLT
THE HOLY SPIRIT HELPS ME OVERCOME:
MY FEAR OF DEATH
But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them do not belong to him at all.) 10 And Christ lives within you, so even though your body will die because of sin, the Spirit gives you life because you have been made right with God. 11 The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you. ROMANS 8:9-11 NLT
MY FEAR OF LOSING MY SALVATION
And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago. 14 The Spirit is God’s guarantee that he will give us the inheritance he promised. EPHESIANS 1:13-14 NLT
And do not bring sorrow to God’s Holy Spirit by the way you live. Remember, he has identified you as his own, guaranteeing that you will be saved on the day of redemption. EPHESIANS 4:30 NLT
MY FEAR OF BEING ALONE
I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. JOHN 14:18 NIV
So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.” ROMANS 8:15 NLT
For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children. 17 And since we are his children, we are his heirs. In fact, together with Christ we are heirs of God’s glory. But if we are to share his glory, we must also share his suffering. ROMANS 8:16-17 NLT
MY FEAR OF NOT HAVING ENOUGH
And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. 27 And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will. ROMANS 8:26-27 NLT
…God will meet all your needs according to the riches of His glory in Christ Jesus. PHILIPPIANS 4:19 NIV

My Notes
Discussion Questions
Choose a couple questions from each section to discuss and reflect on the sermon as a group:
- START HERE: When you’re feeling anxious or afraid, do you tend to: take control, avoid, distract yourself, talk it out, something else? What helps you find solid footing again?
- START HERE: What helps you feel safe, calm, or less alone during a difficult season?
- KEEP GOING: Read 2 Timothy 1:7 NLT. Instead of a spirit of fear and timidity, what has God given us? Where in your life do you most need to receive and experience power, love or self-discipline right now?
- KEEP GOING: The Holy Spirit helps us overcome the fears of: death, losing our salvation, being alone, and not having enough. Which of these fears do you most relate to? How has that affected the way you engage with God or others?
- KEEP GOING: Read Romans 8:9-11 NLT and Ephesians 1:13-14 NLT. The Holy Spirit is God's presence in and with us, and God’s guarantee of what’s to come. Do you find it difficult to trust God when fear tells you your future is uncertain or out of your control? Why or why not?
- KEEP GOING: Read John 14:18 NIV and Romans 8:15-17 NLT. God has not left us alone, but has adopted us as His children. How does the truth of God’s presence and love for you change your perspective of any fears or anxieties you’re facing?
- LIVE IT OUT: Read Romans 8:26-28 NLT. The Holy Spirit helps us even when we don't know what to pray. God is working all things together for good. How do you believe the Holy Spirit is asking you to trust that God’s plans are greater than your fears? What is one way you could live with greater trust this week?
