How to Bring About Racial Reconciliation

Think about heaven

Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth. COLOSSIANS 3:1 NLT

Heaven is beautiful

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the old heaven and the old earth had disappeared. And the sea was also gone. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven like a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. REVELATION 21:1 NLT

Heaven is free of pain

I heard a loud shout from the throne, saying, “Look, God’s home is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them. He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.” REVELATION 21:3-4 NLT

Heaven honors all ethnicities

I saw no temple in the city, for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. And the city has no need of sun or moon, for the glory of God illuminates the city, and the Lamb is its light. The nations will walk in its light, and the kings of the world will enter the city in all their glory. Its gates will never be closed at the end of day because there is no night there. And all the nations will bring their glory and honor into the city. Nothing evil will be allowed to enter, nor anyone who practices shameful idolatry and dishonesty—but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life. REVELATION 21: 22-27 NLT
Then the angel showed me a river with the water of life, clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb. It flowed down the center of the main street. On each side of the river grew a tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, with a fresh crop each month. The leaves were used for medicine to heal the nations. REVELATIONS 22:1-2 NLT

Live as citizens of heaven on earth

Above all, you must live as citizens of heaven, conducting yourselves in a manner worthy of the Good News about Christ. PHILIPPIANS 1:27 NLT
So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you. Have nothing to do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires. Don’t be greedy, for a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world. Because of these sins, the anger of God is coming. You used to do these things when your life was still part of this world. But now is the time to get rid of anger, rage, malicious behavior, slander, and dirty language. Don’t lie to each other, for you have stripped off your old sinful nature and all its wicked deeds. Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like him. In this new life, it doesn’t matter if you are a Jew or a Gentile, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbaric, uncivilized, slave, or free. Christ is all that matters, and he lives in all of us.
Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony. And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful. COLOSSIANS 3:5-15 NLT

Community Group Discussion Guide

  1. What is it about heaven that made focusing on it so important to the author of Colossians?
  2. How does the future of heaven impact your view on the need for diversity in the church?
  3. What steps will you take to make people of any ethnicity feel welcome at Sandals Church, in your community group, and your home?
  4. Take some time to read Colossians 3:5-15 above. Which of the 12 things mentioned are still “lurking” within you (sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires, greed, anger, rage, malicious behavior, slander, dirty language and lying)? What steps will you take to put them to death?
  5. Who do you need to “make allowance for” or “forgive” as instructed in Colossians 3?
  6. Revelation 21:27 says that only those whose names have been written in the book of life may enter into heaven. Close by praying that you as a group would be intentional about sharing your faith, so that more names will be written and more people can be saved!

Personal Reflection Guide

Take a moment to disconnect from your normal daily activities. Calm your heart and focus your attention on Jesus. Imagine just being in his presence. As things of your life try to interrupt you, simply acknowledge them and then imagine handing them over to him. As you’re with Jesus, take notice of the difference between your “regular” life and the time you spend with him. What do you notice? How are you affected by time with Jesus? What happened during your time with him? Be willing to return to that place with him throughout your day and week?
