Becoming Real with Others

The
Missing Piece: Becoming
Real with Others

“Do not judge others, and you will
not be judged” MATTHEW 7:1 NLT

This is the
most famous scripture, but it’s also the most misquoted

People misunderstand the
passage

Or do you not know that the saints
will judge the world? And if the
world is to be judged by you,
are you incompetent to try trivial cases?
Do you not know that we are to judge
angels? How much more, then, matters pertaining to this life! 1 CORINTHIANS 6:2-3 ESV

People manipulate the
passage

For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those
inside the church
whom you are to judge?
God judges those outside. “Purge
the evil person from among you.” 1
CORINTHIANS 5:12-13 ESV

Being real with others is an
exercise of judgment

Judge others the way
you want to be judged

For you will be treated as you treat
others. The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be
judged. MATTHEW 7:2 NLT

Justice—do you rulers know the
meaning of the word?  Do you judge the people fairly? PSALM 58:1 NLT

Judge
yourself first, by the same standard

“And why worry about a speck in your
friend’s eye when you have a log in your own? How can you think of saying to
your friend, ‘Let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,’ when you
can’t see past the log in your own eye? Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in
your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your
friend’s eye.” MATTHEW 7:3-5 NLT

What is God’s
teaching on this issue?

What is my
part in this?

Am I being a
hypocrite?

Where is my
heart towards this person/situation?

Judge
if it’s even worth getting involved

Don’t waste what is holy on people
who are unholy. Don’t throw your pearls to pigs! They will trample the pearls,
then turn and attack you.
MATTHEW 7:6 NLT

It is safer to meet a bear robbed of
her cubs than to confront a fool caught
in foolishness. PROVERBS 17:12 NLT

If
another believer sins against you, go privately and point out the offense. If
the other person listens and confesses it, you have won that person back. But
if you are unsuccessful, take one or two others with you and go back again, so
that everything you say may be confirmed by two or three witnesses. If the
person still refuses to listen, take your case to the church. Then if he or she
won’t accept the church’s decision, treat that person as a pagan or a corrupt
tax collector. MATTHEW 18:15-17 NLT
